Fiberglass Cloth – Core Information

Fiberglass cloth is a functional fabric woven from glass fibers, designed for both industrial and consumer applications. Its core advantages include high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, high strength, and excellent electrical insulation. According to processing and usage, it can be classified into industrial-grade and cleaning-grade types to meet different application scenarios.

1. Core Definition & Raw Material Types

Fiberglass cloth is made from glass fiber. Depending on fiber type and composition, it can be categorized as:

  1. E-glass / Alkali-free Fiberglass Cloth: Mainly composed of aluminum-borosilicate, with alkali oxide content ≤0.8%. Offers excellent insulation and corrosion resistance. Widely used in industrial applications.

  2. C-glass / Medium-alkali Fiberglass Cloth: Alkali oxide content between 11.5%–16%, lower cost, slightly reduced strength and weather resistance compared to alkali-free type. Used for household cleaning and low-end insulation.

  3. Ultra-fine Fiberglass Cloth: Fiber diameter ≤5μm, soft and delicate hand-feel, specifically designed for cleaning applications, avoids scratching sensitive surfaces.

2. Key Properties

PropertyDescription
MechanicalHigh tensile strength (3–5× stronger than cotton of the same thickness), tear-resistant, dimensionally stable, lightweight and easy to cut.
Temperature ResistanceContinuous use temperature 250–550℃, instantaneous resistance >1000℃, non-combustible, non-carbonizing, fire retardant.
Chemical StabilityResistant to acids, alkalis, and most organic solvents (except HF and concentrated alkali), does not mold or rot in humid environments, long service life.
Electrical InsulationAlkali-free types offer high insulation resistance and excellent dielectric strength. Ideal for motors, electrical, and electronic equipment.
Cleaning Features (Ultra-fine)Fine fibers do not scratch surfaces, high water and oil absorption, streak-free cleaning of glass, mirrors, screens, suitable for precision cleaning.

3. Common Specifications & Processing

3.1 Specifications

ApplicationThicknessWidthGSMWeave Type

Cleaning Cloth0.05–0.2mm30–60cm50–200g/m²Plain (ultra-fine weave)
Fire-Resistant0.3–1.2mm100–200cm300–800g/m²Twill, Satin (high density)

3.2 Core Manufacturing Process

  1. Fiber Preparation: Glass is melted and drawn through spinnerets into continuous fibers, then sized to enhance weaving performance and fiber toughness.

  2. Weaving: Done on rapier or projectile looms using plain, twill, or satin patterns. Industrial cloth prioritizes high density; cleaning cloth prioritizes light weight and softness.

  3. Finishing

    • Industrial-grade: Degreasing, heat setting, surface coatings (silicone, epoxy) to enhance insulation and corrosion resistance.

    • Cleaning-grade: Fiber opening, brushing, softening to remove burrs and improve tactile and cleaning performance.

4. Application Scenarios

4.1 Industrial

  • Electrical Insulation: Motor stators, transformers, switchgear insulation pads and wrapping tapes, using high dielectric properties to ensure safety.

  • Fire and Heat Protection: Fire curtains, high-temperature pipe insulation, building fire barrier substrates. Resistant to flame without toxic emissions.

  • Composite Reinforcement: Used as base material in fiberglass (FRP) for boats, automotive parts, wind turbine blades, improving strength and weather resistance.

4.2 Household Cleaning

  • Precision Surface Cleaning: Glass doors, bathroom mirrors, car windshields, computer/phone screens; no scratches or streaks.

  • Kitchen Cleaning: Countertops, stovetops, range hoods; strong oil absorption, easily rinsed, reusable multiple times.

5. Care & Handling

  1. Industrial Cloth: Avoid prolonged contact with HF or concentrated alkalis to prevent fiber corrosion. Store in a dry, ventilated environment.

  2. Cleaning Cloth

    • Washing: Machine wash ≤30℃, mild detergent, avoid bleach and ironing, avoid high temperatures.

    • Drying: Air dry naturally, avoid direct sunlight to prevent fiber stiffening and loss of elasticity.

    • Prohibitions: Do not use on sharp metal surfaces to prevent snagging or damage.
